As UN Secretary-General, his role has centred on preserving dialogue, cooperation and institutional space at a time when geopolitical consensus is becoming harder to achieve. António Guterres has served as the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations since 1 January 2017; his second term runs through 31 December 2026. In September 2026, he described the world as being in an “era of deep uncertainty”, identifying war and peace, inequality, climate change and artificial intelligence as defining tests of global power and cooperation. On the International Day of Peace 2026, Guterres argued that peace is not passive or automatic, but an active and deliberate choice, requiring investment in diplomacy, dialogue, negotiation and peacekeeping. As his mandate approaches its end, the UN has already begun the formal process of selecting his successor, making his final year a natural moment to examine the future of multilateral leadership itself. Trade connected economies. Technology crossed borders. Energy moved through global markets. Supply chains rewarded efficiency. Today, many of those same connections are being reinterpreted as vulnerabilities. The infrastructure of globalization has not disappeared. It is being turned into leverage. The World Trade Organization describes the global trading system in 2026 as facing its most serious and sustained disruption since its creation eight decades ago. Yet around 72 percent of world merchandise trade still takes place under core WTO mostfavoured-nation terms. In other words, fragmentation is accelerating, but interdependence remains enormous. The IMF likewise notes that supply chains are increasingly being redesigned around resilience rather than pure efficiency, while higher trade barriers, geopolitical tensions and disruptions in energy markets are reshaping investment decisions. It is psychological. Governments increasingly plan not around what their partners promise, but around what they might do if relations deteriorate. Once distrust becomes structural, even rational defensive decisions can make everyone less secure . According to the OECD, only 39% of respondents across 30 surveyed countries expressed trust in their national governments, while 44% reported low or no trust. The 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals an even deeper fracture: 70% of respondents worldwide are unwilling or hesitant to trust people with different values, beliefs or backgrounds. Distrust is no longer confined to institutions. It is increasingly shaping how societies perceive differences, relationships and cooperation. The emerging one increasingly rewards room to manoeuvre. From India and Türkiye to the Gulf, states are building relationships across competing centres of power rather than allowing a single alliance to define every part of their foreign policy. This is not neutrality. It is strategic autonomy — and in a fragmented world, optionality is becoming power. Multi-alignment is replacing non-alignment. Contemporary research increasingly describes Türkiye's strategy as polyalignment: maintaining close relationships with competing powers in pursuit of greater strategic autonomy. India faces a similar challenge as it simultaneously manages relations with the United States, Russia, Iran, Israel and Gulf states. Qatar offers another model. Its government explicitly defines preserving relationships during deep disagreement — rather than choosing between them — as central to its mediation strategy. That approach has again become visible in 2026 through Qatari shuttle diplomacy between Washington and Tehran. A NATO ally with active ties to Russia, the Gulf, Central Asia and the wider Global South, Türkiye under Erdoğan has pursued a foreign policy built less on fixed alignment than on strategic flexibility. Türkiye hosted the 2026 NATO Summit in Ankara, reinforcing its central role inside the alliance while NATO leaders reaffirmed collective defence and expanded support for Ukraine. At the same time, Erdoğan said Türkiye would consider deeper involvement, potentially even full membership, in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, while insisting that this should not be interpreted as a move away from NATO or Western ties. Ankara has also continued efforts to revive negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and has maintained working relations with both Moscow and Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale war. The model is not based on scale alone, but on becoming strategically relevant to multiple partners at once. During Mohamed bin Zayed’s September 2026 state visit to Germany, the UAE announced a €40 billion investment package, including advanced digital infrastructure and data centres, while UAE and German companies signed 29 agreements worth more than €9.3 billion. UAE–India trade reached approximately $101.25 billion in FY 2025–26, with both countries setting a target of $200 billion by 2032. His work argues that stronger societies require more than attention and achievement; they require purpose, responsibility and reasons to care. The World Health Organization reported in 2025 that more than one billion people were living with mental-health conditions. Gordon’s argument focuses on one cultural layer within that wider crisis: the beliefs and expectations shaping how young people understand success, relationships and purpose. Harvard’s Making Caring Common project found that 58 percent of surveyed U.S. young adults aged 18–25 reported lacking meaning or purpose during the previous month. States that preserve channels where others lose them gain access, relevance and influence far beyond their size. They can reduce miscalculation, keep negotiations alive and create room for agreements that direct diplomacy can no longer reach. Mediation is no longer only a peacebuilding tool. It is becoming a form of power. In June 2026, the United Nations reaffirmed that mediation sits at the heart of peaceful dispute resolution and stressed the need to strengthen its role as geopolitical divisions deepen. At the same time, Qatar has continued shuttle diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, demonstrating how a comparatively small state can gain strategic importance by preserving access to actors who struggle to communicate directly. In the new diplomacy, money is not merely financing power. It is becoming one of its instruments. Sovereign wealth funds now manage more than $16 trillion in assets, giving state-linked capital unprecedented reach across infrastructure, technology, energy and strategic industries. In a world where trusted connections increasingly determine who reaches capital, markets and opportunity, access itself is becoming a form of infrastructure — and a new source of global influence. “Talent is everywhere. Resilience may appear inefficient because reserves, redundancy and preparation cost money, yet these resources become essential when disruption arrives. Strong systems are not those operating closest to their limits, but those able to adapt, absorb pressure and preserve choice when circumstances change. Traditional frameworks such as Ayurveda may also generate hypotheses worth testing, provided they are examined rigorously.
