But behind almost every financial decision sits something far less rational—fear, memory, identity and belief. Financial psychologist Brad Klontz has spent years studying the hidden scripts that shape how people behave with money. In an anxious economy, those private beliefs can become public economic forces. 4 MONEY SCRIPTS - Klontz’s research identifies four broad patterns of money beliefs: money avoidance, money worship, money status and money vigilance. 422 PARTICIPANTS - The original Money Script Inventory study analysed responses from 422 people and found four distinct belief patterns, three of which were significantly associated with income and net worth. Systemic fragility is global—but its consequences are increasingly divergent. UNITED STATES — POWER WITH DEBT; Strong productivity and innovation coexist with general government debt above 120% of GDP and persistent fiscal deficits. EUROPE — STABILITY WITHOUT SCALE; The euro area remains institutionally strong, but 2026 growth is projected at only 0.9%, while European labour productivity remains roughly 20% below U.S. levels. CHINA — MANAGED DECELERATION; Growth is projected around 4.5% in 2026 as weak domestic demand, property pressures and demographics challenge the old investmentand-export model. They rarely measure how much human energy is being consumed to produce them. Organisational psychologist Adam Grant has spent his career studying motivation, meaning and performance at work. His research points towards an uncomfortable possibility: a society can remain productive while gradually exhausting the people on whom that productivity depends. 20% ENGAGED - Only 20% of employees worldwide were engaged at work in 2025, according to Gallup’s latest global workplace data. 40% STRESSED - Four in ten employees globally reported experiencing significant stress during the previous day in 2025. $1 TRILLION - WHO estimates depression and anxiety alone cost the global economy around $1 trillion each year in lost productivity and approximately 12 billion working days. BEYOND PERFORMANCE - Grant argues that high engagement does not necessarily protect people from exhaustion. His work increasingly emphasises wellbeing, autonomy, support and meaning rather than productivity alone... His approach is built around helping companies strengthen access to people, markets, capital and intelligence before disruption makes those connections urgent. For Scheinkman, the real value of a network lies not in its size, but in the quality of trust within it and the ability to activate that trust when it matters most. The ability to reach the right people, understand change before it becomes obvious, open alternative channels and act when conventional systems fail may increasingly determine which organisations merely survive disruption— and which are positioned to lead through it. They borrow, refinance, tax, restructure and, when they control their own currencies, create more money. That makes sovereign decline difficult to recognise—until debt begins consuming the very economic flexibility governments need to preserve stability. Ray Dalio has spent decades studying what happens next. 94% OF GLOBAL GDP — Global public debt rose to just under 94% of world GDP in 2025. The IMF now projects it to reach 100% by 2029 — a level previously reached globally only in the aftermath of the Second World War. $251 TRILLION — Public and private debt combined stood above. 235% of global GDP — or roughly $251 trillion, in the IMF’s latest Global Debt Database update. 70%+ — Government debt in developing economies has risen from below 40% of GDP in 2010 to more than 70%, reducing fiscal room to absorb future shocks. THE PRESSURE IS STRUCTURAL — Higher interest costs now collide with demands for defence, ageing societies, strategic autonomy, energy transition and social expenditure. Today, protectionism, fragmentation and rising debt threaten that model. Resilience should create alternatives, not isolation, because modern economies remain deeply interdependent. As growth slows, populations age and obligations expand, more debt may be needed simply to preserve stability and living standards.
